Our Story

The Tellico Street location of Bert’s Hometown Grill was built in 1917 by Arvil Harrill. The house, commonly known as the Meek Hicks residence was actually built for Colonel J.C. Spurling, who was Monroe County Court Clerk. Colonel Spurling died in 1948, and the house and farm land was purchased by the M.L. Hicks family. During the development of the Monroe Plaza Shopping Center, the house changed hands several times.

In the summer of 1987, Blankenship and White took over a pizzeria. By 1997, they expanded with a grill, and in 1998, it was renamed Bert’s Hometown Grill & Pizzeria. Nearby, across Tellico Street by Wal-Mart, stands the historic Kefauver house, designed by a Philadelphia architect before the Civil War. It was once home to Mrs. Lottie Johns, aunt of Senator Estes Kefauver, who ran for vice president in 1956. Estes is buried in the family cemetery on the property.
